phpBB vs. MyBB

I'm surprised no one has made this thread yet. I know most of us are MyBB/SMF/vB users but what makes phpBB so popular? It seems like crap to me. Not very friendly to the end user and it seems ridiculously complicated to administrate. I had it installed on my site at one time before going to MyBB and I didn't like it at all.
So, what do you guys think?

RE: phpBB vs. MyBB

It seems easy enough to administrate. It uses a non table based layout for tabular data, which seems to slow it down a fair bit (or else just excessive queries, I haven't checked).

Like any other forum software, its as usable as the next, its just that its so damn slow.

RE: phpBB vs. MyBB

I saw this thread and though, not another heated argument! But really, a lot of people only use PHPBB because it the most well known. Look up forum scripts on google and the easiest to find is always PHPBB, plus it is clearly open-source, which some people may wish to choose.

As with and community suites, it can have its advanatges (although its horrible to theme!). But really it is no match for many other forum suites such as (as quoted in the title) MyBB :D

phpbb.

Good joke :P

Lol its no where near comparable to like any free forum software. They dont use any ajax - i dont think they support inline editing and their interface is horrible. There theme is a mess too.

No it doesn't have too do with a non table based layout just there software it slow. :P SMF did the same move yet it did not impact the speed. A lot of other paid forum softwares are doing it too.

phpBB does have one neat feature though. It uploads images to Imageshack so you don't use up the bandwidth on your site. It would be cool if there was a plugin for MyBB to do that.

Just tested that on there site and I dont see that happening. It looks like it gets uploaded to there FTP /files. That would not be a good idea either for about 10 million boards to be using that :P. It would add so much server weight to imageshack. I know SMF and phpbb have a mod for it though.

I used to use phpBB, it's crap.

I eventually gave up after trying to figure out how to install mods.

phpBB is pretty bad. Weak BBCode and a bad mod system. It's very popular though, due to people not knowing any better.
